True Blood Snubbed by Emmys
By Dan Birlew | Posted July 19, 2009 in Television | 3 Comments »The Emmy nominations announced Thursday, July 16th 2009, left True Blood fans everywhere aghast. True Blood was not nominated in any category whatsoever, in spite of the fact that Anna Paquin just won a Golden Globe for her performance as Sookie Stackhouse.
Granted, season one of the show didn’t achieve the same viewer counts as the current run is receiving (The season two premiere is the most watched episode to ever air on HBO, beating even The Sopranos finale). But the shows nominated in True Blood’s place just sincerely don’t hold a candle, and no one is watching them. Granted, no one is disputing the legitimacy of the nominations for LOST, Mad Men and Breaking Bad. As a LOST fan I’ll go on record as saying that this season was the best ever and should easily win the category, and the other two are both well-deserving original shows. And while I’m a huge Dexter fan, I’ll admit that season two was far better than this past season. But who in the world cares about Big Love, House, or Damages? No one watches those shows. House has to be the cheesiest, least believable doctor show ever. So though not everyone may agree that True Blood is a great show, the Academy could at least nominate something deserving in its place.
While snubbing Anna Paquin is bad, I think the other actors on the show are getting a major dis here as well. Ryan Kwanten is from Australia, yet he performs with a perfect Louisiana accent. He also deserves acting props for playing a severely stupid character with a good deal of pride, compassion and integrity. And Stephen Moyer is a British actor playing the southern gentleman vampire to perfection, never letting on that he’s really from across the pond.
Like a few years (or was it decades) ago when the Academy snubbed Buffy the Vampire Slayer in its truly phenomenal final season, it seems that vampires are truly cursed when it comes to awards time.

Here, here! I concur.
This is a travesty. True Blood is the best thing on cable, if not all TV, especially now that BSG is gone. It is smart, subversive and thought-provoking. Most importantly, it is a hell of a lot of fun to watch.
“Subversive,” I like that.
