Following in the footsteps of the highly successful God of War HD re-release of old titles, Ubisoft announced today that both the Splinter Cell HD trilogy and Prince of Persia HD trilogy for PS3 will be released simultaneously at the PlayStation Store and on single Blu-ray disc at retailers March 22nd. Each three-game collection retails for $39.99 in either format. All games are remastered with higher resolution textures and display at 720p or 1080p, and also with the option of stereoscopic 3D.

The Splinter Cell HD trilogy features the first three games: Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The games of the Prince of Persia HD collection are already available on the PSN store, selling individually for $15 apiece. The trio includes Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. The bundle will allow PoP fans to save five bucks.

The POP trilogy has been out over here for a while (for somereason the HD edition was released sometime around the new year). Unlike the GOW release, it’s a fairly weaker HD port showing it’s age. Good only if you never finished the original trilogy (which I almost did as the second game is a complete struggle to finish) or are a complete trophy whore.

Splinter Cell will be a bit more interesting. Most of the PS2 editions were slightly downgraded from their X-Box counterparts, so hopefully the HD ports are based on the X-Box originals but probably not.

Yeah, I first played Splinter Cell on the GameCube. Only because I owned that system before I received an Xbox as a gift. Big mistake. The Xbox version was much better, for both graphics and game play. But later I played the two sequels on PC. Which I feel was definitely the best way to play them. I’m really curious to know whether they look better in HD than on PC. I’ll probably wait for the word of mouth before buying.

Oh yeah, I recently gave away all my Splinter Cell games, except for the GameCube one, in all it’s glory. ;) So I suppose I’d have no way of comparing the versions myself if I bought them again on PS3. :P

Still need to buy the God of War Collection. Still haven’t played GoW2 or 3!
