Resident Evil 5 Demo Walkthrough: Public Assembly

Chris Redfield and his partner, Sheva (“Sheh-vah”) Alomar, start off in an alcove just southwest of Kijuju’s public square. The heroes are soon discovered by the Majini, humans who appear to be infected by some malignant combination of the Progenitor virus and Las Plagas from Resident Evil 4. Once the pair is discovered, the objective is to survive a non-stop attack by endless waves of Majini until backup arrives. The basic way to survive is stay mobile, collect ammunition dropped by enemies, find high ground, and blast aside all imminent threats.
If you’re playing the demo for the first time, it is strongly recommended that you hone your skills in single-player mode before venturing into online co-op.
Get Comfortable, While it Lasts….
Before venturing toward the main area, take some time to get accustomed to the controls. Even if you’ve played Resident Evil 4, this game has new features to learn. Press up, down, left and right on the d-pad to learn the new instant item-switch system. The items equipped are based on their position in the Inventory Menu. If moving feels weird, change your control scheme to suit your style. Resident Evil 4 veterans will acclimate easier by changing the control scheme to Type A.
If playing single-player, give your health items to Sheva to make recovery automatic. Press the Inventory button to open your inventory screen. Press the button displayed at the top to open Sheva’s inventory off to the right. Use this screen to trade items with her. When AI-controlled Sheva has recovery items, she will use them to heal herself and Chris. Handing the first aid job over to her makes single-player easier. Also, move ammo and health items out of the central squares on every side of your inventory. That way, new weapons such as grenades will fill those spaces, making them easier to equip without need to open the menu.
Barricade the Storehouse
With inventory issues settled, follow the curve to a ledge. Press the Action button to drop into the yard behind a storehouse. Examine the table on the right to read a document about the new “Dying” status. If Sheva gets close to death, “Dying” will be marked on her display in the lower right corner of the screen. Move to her quickly and press the Partner Action button to resuscitate her. Resuscitation only restores a small amount of health, so administer recovery items afterward if possible. If either character’s health is completely depleted, the game is over.
Stepping through the doorway triggers a gruesome scene, at the end of which every Majini in the town assaults the storehouse. During this portion of the demo, the player(s) are restricted to the storehouse and the little yard surrounding it. A large gate blocks access to the public square proper for the time being. So the idea is to hunker down and delay enemies from breaking into the storehouse.
First, barricade the windows. Move to the far side of the nearest bookcase on the north wall. Two button icons should pop up. Pressing Action causes Chris to push the bookcase himself, or pressing the Partner Action button commands Sheva to push the bookcase. To save time, press the Partner Action button to command Sheva to push the bookcase in front of the window. While she takes care of that, move over to the other bookcase and push it to barricade the door.
With the two entrances barred, start gathering items. Use your knife to slash crates, barrels, and stacks of fruit to reveal hidden items such as ammunition and gold. Try not to hog all of the ammunition. In Single-player mode, you can command Sheva to pick up an item by pressing the Partner Action button instead of the Action button.
If Sheva gets in your way, command her to “attack” by holding the Partner Action button and press up on the d-pad. This causes her to move independent of Chris. To make her stick by your side again, hold Partner Action and press down to command her to “cover” you.
Make a Stand
Quickly collect all the items, then try to prevent breach of your barricades. In Single-player, the best strategy is to stand near the stack of melons to the left of the window. Train your handgun’s sights through the thin crack between the bookcase and the window frame. When the Majini break the windowpane, start shooting them through the crack.
Even when they break the bookcase, the majority of Majini climbing the gate outside will head for the window. Continue blasting them as they enter. Target enemies’ heads to inflict greater damage. Critical headshots occur randomly, and kill a foe instantly. Use this to save ammuntion. Also, shooting a close-range foe in the head may stun them, as indicated by a foe doubling over in pain. While they are vulnerable, run up and press Action to perform a straight punch. This powerful attack knocks one or more enemies down, making them easier to shoot on the floor.
Take It Outside
Continue defending the storehouse until Chris radios the helicopter pilot for backup. Soon after this dialog, Majini break a hole in the roof. This event means the storehouse is about to be overrun; time to leave. Approach the window or (what’s left of) the door and press the Action button to go outside. Quickly collect any items and ammunition dropped on the ground by defeated enemies. Equip the shotgun (Chris) or the rifle (Sheva) and position yourself near the large gate. Blast away attacking foes and wait for someone to come open the gate….
Enter the Executioner
The executioner soon approaches the front gate from the other side. With one massive swing, he knocks down the barricade. However, a glitch prevents this attack from doing any damage to a character standing near the gate. Exploit this by blasting away at the executioner while he swings. Try to time this so that your second or third blast hits him right after he crashes the gate. This stuns him momentarily. While he’s hunched, press the Action button to deck him with an uppercut. Then try to get away.
The executioner is a brutal enemy that is hard to kill. He can break down weak walls such as any of the patches with no contrete, just wood. With one swing of his axe, he can put either Chris or Sheva in dying status. If he hits both characters at the same time, “Game Over.” Stun him by blasting him in the face with the shotgun or rifle, and then knock him away with an uppercut or roundhouse kick. He cannot be stunned once he begins to swing his axe; so don’t bother trying, just run! Either sidestep his attacks (in a control type that includes strafing) or back away. The executioner can be killed with roughly 12 shotgun blast-melee followup combos. However, the swarms of Majini playing hell with your character make this extremely difficult. Seizure by a Majini while the executioner is around nets you a toe-tag, guaranteed. He drops a (golden ring of some kind) when killed.
Light Up Their Day
Once the gate is down, move away from the storehouse and into the clearing. Continue straight ahead and past a stack of red barrels. Notice the dark line of oil across the ground? Shooting the barrels lights this entire area, creating a flame barrier that damages and kills all enemies who touch it. Equip your handgun and shoot Majini until the executioner draws within range of the barrels. Then shoot them to set him and the whole area on fire.
Stacked red barrels with yellow bands contain oil, and create fires when shot. Look for dark oil leaks on the ground around these barrels to determine where the fire will spread, and make sure you’re out of harm’s path before shooting. Solid red barrels explode when shot, so make sure that you and your partner are nowhere near them. If you get trapped close to an exploding barrel, use your knife to safely knock away enemies and escape without detonating the barrel.
The Western Area
As you head through the fallen gate, the central path divides the public square into two sides, the west (on your left) and the east (on your right). Immediately to the west is a narrow alley running around the scaffold. An exploding barrel sits in the alley. Pursuing enemies such as the executioner can be funneled into the alley and blown up simultaneously. A ladder on the nearest corner of the scaffold allows you to climb up to a platform that connects to the nearby building. Climbing to the highest level of this scaffold prevents the executioner from following, and allows you to pick off enemies easily as they try to scale the platform.
Inside the building, an Incendiary Grenade and a Hand Grenade rest on a bookshelf. Grab them quickly and then run to the top of the stairs. Toss the grenades down the stairs as enemies pile into the area below. There is also a box of Machinegun Ammo in the darker corner of the lower level, to take for later.
After using the grenades, ascend the steps to the upper level. Head to your right and drop off the ledge into a narrow alley heading north above the building. Some Majini usually leap over the barrier on your right. Blast them out of your way and head to the fruit stand to the north. Open the suitcase on the fruit stand to find a VZ61 Machinegun. Take this and have fun with it, or call Sheva over to grab it. In single-player mode, it is recommended to give her the machinegun so that you may continue stunning the executioner with the shotgun. Also note the oil barrels in this area, which can be used against the executioner or a new wave of Majini.
The Eastern Zone
Heading left from the storehouse, there’s a small picket fence in the corner. Press Action to vault over this fence, and turn left to spot a ladder. Climb up this ladder and you can follow a small platform over to the second level of the storehouse. A box of Handgun Ammo and a Green Herb are located here, as well as a random-item crate and a barrel to smash. Climb the ladder here up to the rooftop, where 3 Hand Grenades lie in the corner. Enemies have a downright difficult time reaching this area, and the executioner cannot reach it at all. If you want to wait for the helicopter to arrive, this is the perfect place to do it. However, if the executioner is still alive, those three frags you just found should help finish him off…
The small stone house on this side contains a ton of ammunition and items. However, this house also has a weak wall that the executioner can easily break through. The items are probably too numerous to collect before the executioner breaches your confines. So leave the rest and abandon the house by leaping through the rear window. Head directly north to the top of the area to find some ammo and a fruit stand. Slash the melons on the fruit stand to find a Hand Grenade.
Some wooden stairs behind the stone house lead up to a platform connected to the roof. At first, it may seem like you’ve reach a dead end. However, Chris and Sheva can leap the small gaps between the house rooftop, the burned-out trolley, and the small concrete building where a Green Herb is located. Enemies have a tough time jumping to the trolley or small concrete building top, making it easy to hold them off until the helicopter arrives.
Captain Kirk Arrives!
As mentioned above, the objective is to survive until Kirk arrives in the helicopter to blow up the northern gate. The duration is roughly six minutes thirty seconds from the time you enter the storehouse, or close. Until the ending scene, stay on the move, run full speed, pick up new weapons and ammo dropped by enemies, and blast anything that gets in your way. In co-op mode, be sure to stay close to your partner, especially if he or she is always on the move.
