Okay I admit it… I’m LOST

The Incident

The Season 5 finale presented so many answers–some of which were veiled among new questions–that sorting them out may honestly take months. And months we have, since we’re looking at a long drought until LOST resumes in spring 2010. I recorded the finale on DVR, and frankly I’ll probably have to watch it a few times to understand all of it.

Aside from Sayid getting shot and Jack carrying out his plan to blow up the electromagnetic pocket beneath the Swan with the core of the hydrogen bomb, not much happened in 1977 that we couldn’t predict. The Kate-Juliet-Sawyer love triangle came to a head in a very heartbreaking way, with Juliet sacrificing herself to carrying out Jack’s plan and hopefully erase the past. Whether she was successful remains to be seen next season.

Jack plants the bomb

Jack attempts to avert the "incident" with the hydrogen bomb core.

But the events occurring in 2007 were far more confusing. Locke and the Others finally arrived at the true home of Jacob, which turns out to be the foot of the giant four-toed statue and not the cabin at all. The “shadow of the statue” people took Frank with them to the main Island, along with their mysterious cargo container. They trekked through the jungle with a clear sense of navigation, meaning that at least Ilana has been there before, if not all of them. Proceeding directly to the cabin, they find the surrounding ring of ash broken. Ilana goes inside to find the cabin empty and falling apart. She finds a cloth bearing the likeness of the full statue. Returning to Frank and the others, Ilana tells them that Jacob hasn’t been at the cabin for a long time, and someone else has been using it. They burn it down. Several hours later they arrive at the statue, where they peaceably surrender to the Others. Ilana asks for “Ricardus,” which it turns out is Richard’s real name. She asks her “shadow of the statue” question, to which Richard replies in Latin (something like “He who saves us”). Satisfied, Ilana opens the cargo container to show them the body of Locke, who has remained dead all this time.

However, Ben and the thing imitating Locke are already inside the statue’s base, confronting Jacob. To the Locke/thing, Jacob says “I guess you finally found your loophole.” Not understanding–but jealous of Locke nonetheless–Ben flies into a self-righteous rage and stabs Jacob. As he bleeds out, Jacob whispers, “They’re coming! They’re coming!” The Locke/thing kicks Jacob’s body into the fire, finishing him.

    Excellent, excellent, excellent recap, Dan!

Even when Ben came back to the island and they were all following ‘Locke’ on their quest to find Jacob, it seemed that Richard and Ben were still in on something together and that they were letting Locke THINK that he was the leader of the Others. But, once you throw Smokey in the mix as a possible orchestrator… that sorta becomes a game changer yet again.

Can not wait for next season. We’ll have to make plans to watch the Series Finale together. I really enjoyed watching this season’s finale with other Lost addicts!

Definitely. Viewing LOST really does benefit from audience participation, and makes those (many and long) commercial breaks fly by. Thanks, John!

  3. I’d like to think I’m not alone in saying this is the best Lost finale yet. It’s always a good cliffhanger when every major character in the show could have just died.
