  • Jeez, that's a lot to remember! :))

Strange thing though, the film thread had 'vanilla' in the address and the drop box worked fine, this thread doesn't have 'vanilla' in it and the box doesn't work. Which is how you said it would be.

But the strange thing is that both threads were navigated the same way - danbirlew.com > click on the forum link > click on the thread to view. One had vanilla the other didn't?

The only difference was that I opened the film thread in a new tab and this one was just clicked as normal.

And here's me going off topic again, I really should stop doing that and see if there's a general teething problems thread :))

The forum is only embedded on the blog site. If you clicked on links such as Permalink in a post or "Back to Discussions" at the bottom of a thread, it will take you to the actual forum location which is at http://danbirlew.com/vanilla Same thing with the link in the mobile message at the top. And you're welcome to browse the forums either way, of course. ;)

Wait, it's not doing that now that I'm trying it. Were you browsing with mobile, or after clicking the Mobile link in the message at the top @vincent?
  • Nope, no mobile. It was on the PC in Firefox as normal. Both links were straight from the forum main page. I tend to open a few newly updated threads at a time in different tabs while keeping the main forum page open and untouched until I'm done. To clarify:

    Opened www.danbirlew.com
Clicked Forum at the top of the page

From this page I do 3 things without reloading the page from anywhere:

Right clicked on the film thread and "open link in new tab" (opens in the background as tab 2)
Right clicked on this thread and "open link in new tab" (again it opens in the background as tab3)
Left clicked on the "adjusting to the new forums" thread

So both links were opened from the exact same page. At the moment, I've got the "adjusting to new forum" page opened as tab 1 (if I press back I get to the main forum page), this one as tab 2 and the film one as tab 3.

Strangely, the two "open in a new tab" links have vanilla in their address. The "adjusting" one doesn't, this is the one that was just left clicked. If I press back in the "adjusting" one I get back to the main forum page.

Another thing, the vanilla tabs have the topic in the tab title, but in the "adjusting" (non-vanilla) one it just has "Forums | DanBirlew.com".

I'm shit at describing things so I hope that makes sense! If not I'll have to figure out how to make a video of what I do and post it on youtube.

No thanks, @vincent, you explained perfectly. It's the right-clicking that breaks the page out of the embed page loop. Whereas a normal left-click on a link keeps you in the embedded page. I'll report that at the Vanilla site, thanks! :)

EDIT: So actually there WAS a fix, which I implemented. However, it may not be working in Firefox yet, I don't have Firefox to check at the moment.
  • Nope it's not working yet. I've just done a normal click and got a # instead of vanilla in the address (I should've said that before) and there are no emoticons (which I think is how this all started).

    -edit-
Right clicking goes to the vanilla version, but is then immediately redirected to the non-vanilla version. I can't see exactly what I'm typing as the edit box hasn't increased in size!

In a way, this fix has made it worse in firefox as now I'm getting the non-vanilla version whichever way I open the pages. I can live with it though.

Okay, let me wrap my head around this. Please answer these:

    1. You're using Firefox only?
    2. You can't see the edit box when editing a post? Or, you can't see the edit box when posting AT ALL?
    3. You can't see any emoticons?

EDIT: Some print screens might help, if you can send them my way via dan.birlew@danbirlew.com

I've had a quick go Dan, 1. Yes only Firefox. 2. My edit box shows up fine, about the same size as the post comment box I'm typing into now. 3. I can see the little smiley icon in the top right hand corner of the edit/post box, but it's greyed out and won't let me access it!

    Hope that helps.
  • 1. Yes, Firefox only

    2. I can see the edit box when editing, but it's only the size of the initial post, it doesn't increase and there's no scrollbar. The writing disappears off the bottom. Only when editing, typing this in is fine, the box is increasing with every new line

    3. I can see the emoticons in your post fine but I can't use the box for emoticons unless "vanilla" is in the address bar. The only way I got vanilla in the address is if I right clicked and opened in a new tab. That doesn't happen anymore now that you've implemented the fix. Now every page I go to has "forums/#" instead of "vanilla":

    Now I have:
    http://www.danbirlew.com/forums/#/discussion/105/emoticons-or-smileys

Before the fix I could get:
    http://www.danbirlew.com/vanilla/discussion/105/emoticons-or-smileys

When I had vanilla in the address everything was fine. When it was "forums/#" the edit box didn't increase and the emoticons button didn't work.

    -edit-
Strangely the edit is now working fine. But the emoticons only work if I stop the browser as soon as vanilla has loaded, before it gets the chance to redirect to forums/#

That's another thing since the fix, every link I click on goes to the "vanilla" version then once that's finished loading it immediately redirects to "forums/#".

I really should proof read before finishing posting then I can rearrange the whole post so that I don't have to edit and add a note in that should have gone in earlier!

@vince Oh! I thought you meant you couldn't see ANY of the emoticons themselves. You should see all of them in the list above. That's pretty much what this post is about, the smiley thing in the window isn't going to work on the embedded version of the site, so use the codes instead. Most people only use :) :( :D ;) B-) :| :P anyway.

Regarding the edit box, I just disabled a plugin that was causing some other problems, such as not allowing you to reset your password through the sign-in form. Ironic, since this plugin's function is supposed to be to make the forums run more efficiently. :P The password reset is operational now, so it's good to see that the edit box is now working. It should 1) expand as your post grows longer, dropping down for each line, and 2) same thing when you're editing a previous post.

Meanwhile I'll try to find the code for the smiley box and comment it out, so that it's not in the way when posting. I mean since it doesn't work, it's just annoying having it there, right?
  • Sorry, I guess I really should have a good think about exactly what I'm posting!

I should have said from the start that I could see the smileys in your post, but I could only use the drop box if the address had vanilla in it. That would have save a lot of confusion!!

Discovered that forcing redirect ruins the mobile version, so that's off again now.
  • I wondered why I got the vanilla address just now in a new tab :))

So, why do we have two addresses for the same pages? Why is there one with "vanilla" and another with "forums/#"? I know that I probably shouldn't be seeing one of them, but I'm just curious .

I really should try this out in IE8, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Because the forums are installed at danbirlew.com/vanilla. And that's where the mobile link redirects people to so they can browse the forums full screen with a different look. The forums are only embedded at http://danbirlew.com/forums but the engine is located elsewhere.
