Secrets

Endings

The ending received is listed on the game result screen appearing after the credits roll.

Good+: Helped Kaufmann find red bottle at Haerby Inn. Used Unknown Liquid to save Cybil.
Good: Helped Kaufmann find red bottle at Haerby Inn. Cybil dead.
Bad+: Didn’t help Kaufmann. Used Unknown Liquid to save Cybil.
Bad: Didn’t help Kaufmann. Cybil dead.
UFO: Use the Channeling Stone at the following locations to see a light in the sky:

  1. Midwich Elementary School Roof
  2. Hospital Courtyard, on your way to fight the Floatstinger boss.
  3. Haerby Inn Courtyard
  4. In the pilot’s cabin of the boat.
  5. Top of lighthouse.

Secret Items

Secret items unlocked appear in the background while the game result screen is displayed. Replay the game in NEXT FEAR mode as follows to find the following items:

Gasoline Tank: Clear the game with any ending. Obtain in the Gas Station at Ellroy and Bloch. Can use to obtain either the Chainsaw or Rock Drill. In subsequent NEXT FEAR games, you can use the Gasoline Tank on the other weapon and obtain both!
Chainsaw: Clear the game with any ending. Obtain at Cut-Rite Chain Saws on Bloch St (requires Gasoline Tank). Mows down standing enemies.
Rock Drill: Clear the game with any ending. Obtain in room below Orridge Bridge Control Room on Bloch St (requires Gasoline Tank).
Channeling Stone: Clear the game with Good+ ending. Obtain in Convenience Store 8 at Bachman Rd. and Finney St. Use at five locations listed below to activate UFO Ending.
Hyperblaster: Clear the game with UFO ending. Appears in inventory at start of NEXT FEAR game. Infinite ammo, rarely misses at any range. Original version has yellow beam. Obtain 8 star ranking or higher to change beam to orange. Obtain Gold Ranking to change beam color to green. (Can also obtain this by plugging a Konami Justifier light gun into controller port 2 of a PlayStation (not PSP) and starting a new game, without having to clear game.)
Katana: View Bad+ Ending, or obtain both the Chainsaw and the Rock Drill in subsequent clears. The Katana is located in the Doghouse on Levin St.

Other Secrets

Different Demo FMV: After clearing the game with a Good+ ending, the opening FMV that plays before the title screen changes. Instead of Harry and his wife finding the infant, the FMV now shows Harry and Cybil finding the infant.
Bullet Adjust: In the Options screen, press the shoulder buttons to view the “Extra Options” screen. Upon clearing the game a new option appears at the bottom: “Bullet Adjust.” This allows you to set a multiplier for all ammo pickups. Clearing the game with any ending allows you to set Bullet Adjust to x2, clearing twice to x3, clearing three times to x4, four times to x5, and clear five times to raise Bullet Adjust to x6. But the key is to view a different ending each time you clear the game, otherwise the Bullet Adjust may not go up (according to various complaints). Note that there are also rumors (which I don’t know to be true) that Bullet Adjust can go as high as x9 after clearing Hard Mode with a Gold 10-star Ranking.
Difficulty Increase: By clearing the game with a rank of 7 stars or higher, the game automatically bumps up the difficulty level one notch. Thus if you played Easy Mode you’ll go to Normal, and from Normal to Hard.
Gold Game Results: Here is how to score gold rankings (instead of white) in every category on the game result screen. Achieving all gold at once unlocks the green Hyperblaster beam (which does greater damage):

  • Mode: Never turns gold. Sorry.
  • Game Clear: Turns gold after clearing the game five or more times.
  • Ending: Must be the Good+ ending.
  • Saves: Must be 2 or less for gold. Save only before the Lizard boss and in Alessa’s Bedroom right before the final boss fight.
  • Continues: Must be 1 or 0 to turn gold. Use Load game instead of Continue if killed.
  • Total Time: Must be below 1h30m0s to achieve gold. Go after key items only.
  • Walking Distance and Running Distance: Never turn gold. Sorry.
  • Items: Collect at least 150/204 to achieve gold with either +5 or +6 of the secret items including Katana.
  • Defeated Enemies by Fighting/Defeated Enemies by Shooting: The data remains unverified, but the general consensus is to kill every enemy in the game (250) with at least 75 by fighting (foot stomp) and the rest by shooting (quicker). Using secret items (Chainsaw, Rock Drill, Katana, Hyperblaster) instantly negates a gold ranking. So use the Handgun + Foot Stomp to down and then kill 75 enemies, then use the Hunting Rifle + Bullet Adjust to kill the remaining enemies.
  • Shooting Style: Either all four facets are gold at the same time, or none at all. The key is to only shoot at enemies within flashlight range for most of the game. Allow enemies to approach within Short Range to improve your score to 0.40 or higher and reduce No Aiming Shots. Back away as they advance to improve your Middle Range shots to 0.60 or so. You’ll want your No Aiming Shots to be low, around 0.09 or less. If you see yourself miss, reload from your last save and start over. To score high in Long Range Shots all you must do is fire on Incubus with the Rifle from the outskirts of the final boss area.
