True Blood Season 2 Starts June 14
Ms. Laura and I went and did it again. Now we’re addicted to another show, one you wouldn’t think we’d like. True Blood is an HBO series about vampires, airing every Sunday starting June 14th. Season one is currently available on DVD and you can watch episodes at HBO.com. The series follows the misadventures of mind-reading waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin, in a Golden Globe-winning role) after a southern gentleman vampire moves into her hometown of Bon Temps, Louisiana, and sweeps her off her feet. Sookie is the first person in her town to like the vampire, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), because he’s the one person whose thoughts she cannot read. Their relationship blossoms throughout the first season. The show is helmed by Six Feet Under and American Beauty producer/writer Alan Ball, and it’s based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

Sookie and Bill from True Blood
At times intense, but mostly quirky and humorous, the show is a real joy to watch with the vampire storyline often taking a backseat to all the dumb situations the human characters get themselves into. The wife and I probably love it because we’re both displaced southerners, and the show reminds us of all the good times we’ve had in Louisiana and Texas. Judging by some of the viral materials HBO is putting on the Internet–such as competing sites for the fictional American Vampire League and Fellowship of the Sun–it looks like the vampire civil rights movement that took a backseat in season one is going to get a little more attention this year. Also, I hope we find out more about that weird lady who took in Tara after causing her to crash by standing naked and filthy in the road with a pig. Yeah, it’s that kind of show.
