Resident Evil 5 Demo Walkthrough: Shanty Town

Resident Evil 5 Demo Walkthrough: Shanty Town

The Objective

Though it occurs later in the game, Shanty Town proves to be much easier to play than Public Assembly. Enemies appear only a few at a time instead of in ceaseless waves, most of the time. Continuing their mission to stop the plague in Kijuju, Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar must proceed through the Shanty Town. They encounter a few traps and some hairy situations, but nothing that a little teamwork can’t handle. Unfortunately the exit from the area is locked, and the key is held by a chainsaw-weilding maniac. You must defeat the boss to complete the demo.

Defeat the Guard to clear the stage.

The Slaughterhouse

From the starting point, head forward to the corner of the adjacent building. Search the planter to find a clipboard with some valuable info regarding trading items in the Inventory Menu. After perusing this file, open your Inventory Menu and give your health item to Sheva. Throughout the demo, give all health items to her. Having recovery aids on hand means Sheva can heal you both when needed, automating the task.

Shoot through the window, then kick open the door on the left to surprise the dwellers within.

Shoot through the window, then kick open the door on the left to surprise the dwellers within.

From here you can go downstairs to the left, or go through a gate to the right. Going right has an advantage, allowing you to sneak up on the Majini waiting in ambush inside the building. As you proceed along the path, you’ll spot the back of a Majini’s head through the adjacent window. Approach slowly, and stop by a pile of sandbags. Aim through the window with your handgun, and try to blow off his head. Even if you don’t score a critical headshot, you can still work the situation to your advantage. Immediately run over to the door on the left and press Action twice to kick it in. With the proper timing, you’ll knock down the Majini standing on the other side. Shoot him while he’s down, and take out the other two foes as they advance.

Examine the butcher's blocks to view some gruesome details.

Collect the Handgun Ammo on the corner hutch and any other items dropped by enemies. Investigate the central table to examine some gruesome remains. Seems someone nearby is handy with a chainsaw….

Proceed to the window at the back of the room and press Action to crash through it. Head to the right and around the corner to find a crate. Use your knife to smash it and obtain an item. Hop back through the window and exit the slaughterhouse through the door you came in. A Green Herb may still be standing outside the door, if Sheva didn’t collect it already. Head around the corner to your left and smash a couple of crates to reveal some more randomly determined items, then head up the slope.

Shoot the flyers that break off from attacking the chopper.

Divide and Conquer

The helicopter flies into view, besieged by some kind of flying monsters. Two of these insect monsters break off to attack Chris and Sheva. Take them down with handgun fire, timing your shots to avoid missing when they swoop or dive. The flyers have a large claw appended to their tails, which they use to grab victims. Be ready to help Sheva if one of these flying monsters grabs her.

Head uphill to the base of a low building. Move to the base of a raised ladder and press the Partner Action button to boost Sheva onto the roof. From the central platform, she can provide cover fire while you fight your way up the slope. She provides better support if you press and hold the Partner Action button and press up on the d-pad to command her to “Attack.”

Killing the bomber on the ledge releases a flyer.

Killing the bomber on the ledge releases a flyer.

After the boost, turn left and run up the slope. A Majini at the raised corner throws Molotov cocktails. Killing him causes his body to rip open. A flying insect emerges. Whether or not you can kill this monster before it flies over to attack Sheva depends on the number of Majini coming down the slope. Shoot it as many times as you can before it seizes her without leaving yourself vulnerable to ground attack.

When the slope clears, continue up to the base of the stairs outside the palazzo. The door bursts open and Majini pour out. Shoot the leader in the face, then approach him and press Action to perform a straight punch. Knocking him down causes a domino effect, knocking back all the foes behind him and giving you time to shoot them all before they rise.

Search the Ruins

Call Sheva back to your side by pressing the Partner Action button. She’ll climb down from the central building and join you inside the palazzo. Before proceeding, trade items with her to make sure that you have all the rifle ammo and handgun ammo and she has all the machinegun ammo.

Shoot the Majini hiding in the stall before it grabs Sheva.

Shoot the Majini hiding in the stall before it grabs Sheva.

Head inside and around the corner to the left into what’s left of a bathroom. Hold Partner Action and press up to send Sheva down the aisle. A Majini charges out of the last stall to attack her. Blast him before he grabs her. Then explore the stall he came from to find Handgun Ammo and any other items he may have dropped.

Return to the entrance and go through the broken wall into the back room. Command Sheva to take the Red Herb off the central table, then turn around to your left and shoot the Majini waiting in ambush in the back corner. A breakable barrel in the opposite corner yields a random item when smashed. Examine the double doors to find out that they are locked from the outside. To get those doors open, Chris and Sheva must split up once more.

Head upstairs and take out Majini on the second level. Find the 2 Hand Grenades on the chair to the far left and outside on the balcony. It’s better if Chris hangs onto these for later. Proceed up to the third floor and smash the twin barrels for random items. Collect the box of Hangun Bullets on the hutch, and command Sheva to take the Green Herb on the chair.

Vault Sheva across the gap, then get ready to cover her.
Vault Sheva across the gap, then get ready to cover her.

Sort your inventory so that Sheva has plenty of machinegun ammo and Chris has all the rifle bullets. If Sheva’s machinegun ammo is lacking, then give her all the handgun ammo. Equip the rifle and move to the balcony edge. Press the Partner Action button to launch Sheva across the gap to the opposite rooftop.

NOTE: Before throwing Sheva across the gap, stand at the edge and turn around. Look up and to the right to find a small blue jewel. Shooting the jewel causes some kind of bonus to happen, although it’s somewhat irrelevant to the demo. This may be similiar to a mini-game that occured in Resident Evil 4, where shooting all the blue gems caused the Merchant to offer the Punisher handgun for sale.

Drop quickly to the next balcony down to protect Sheva.

Sniper Support

Immediately after launching Sheva across the gap, turn to your right and run to a hole in the balcony floor. Press Action to drop to the second level balcony. Do this quickly enough and you’ll cancel out an animation that shows Sheva being attacked by Majini in the other building. Cancelling this animation is important in reducing the amount of damage she sustains and her survival.

Use the rifle to snipe the Majini advancing up the stairs. Due to the distance, headshots are essential. Otherwise, they’ll just take the lick and keep advancing on Sheva. Prioritize taking out enemies armed with flaming crossbows, so that they cannot shoot her.

Shoot the enemies blocking Sheva from the stairs.

Shoot the enemies blocking Sheva from the stairs.

Note the exploding barrel in the center of the floor. If the enemies are near it and Sheva is far enough away, shoot it to elminate the crowd simultaneously. Otherwise, avoid aiming in its direction so that Sheva is not accidentally killed while you are helpless to aid her.

When Sheva breaks through the throng and reaches the ground floor, aim downward and take out the Majini pursuing her into the street. When finally she unlocks the double doors below you, equip your handgun and go downstairs.

Help Sheva clear the streets before item gathering.

Help Sheva clear the streets before item gathering.

Note that the threatening music continues. You have a few seconds to pick up any dropped items in the street, as well as to smash a nearby crate to obtain a random item. Very soon, more enemies climb over the wall at the end of the street. Take them down quickly, then turn around and take down enemies advancing from the stairs behind you.

The music stops when all enemies are killed. Take some time to search for items in the building Sheva explored. Smash the crates on the ground level and the barrel on the second floor to obtain random items. Another crate and barrel lie in the back alley behind the building.

Exit the building and head up the street toward the long set of stairs. Give the Green Herb on the left to Sheva. Smash a barrel in the corner, and then board the bombed-out bus and search near the driver’s seat to find a Hand Grenade.

Shoot the Guard in the head with the rifle.

Shoot the Guard in the head with the rifle, then follow up with a punch.

The Gate Guardian

Equip Chris with the rifle and reload. When both he and Sheva have the right weapons and inventory and are prepared, start heading up the stairs. Stop about 1/3rd of the way and command Sheva to “Attack” by pressing Partner Action + d-pad up. This causes her to run ahead of Chris and trigger a cutscene where a chainsaw-swinging maniac with a bag over his head emerges from the garden above. This enemy, known as the “Guard,” can kill Chris or Sheva with a single chainsaw attack, ending your game instantly. You both need to stay on the run throughout this segment.

Shoot the Guard as Sheva leads him on a merry chase.

Shoot the Guard as Sheva leads him on a merry chase.

As the Guard approaches, aim the rifle at his head and fire. A rifle shot to the head stuns him immediately, rendering him vulnerable to a follow-up melee action. Now you see how to defeat chainsaw man, but firing and reloading the rifle requires you move some distance from him. If Sheva’s command is set to “cover,” she will stick by your side. Unfortunately, this also draws the enemies to you as well, making use of the rifle difficult. By setting her command to “attack” as described above, Sheva moves and fights independently of Chris. She also manages to draw the attention of most enemies in the area, allowing you to snipe the Guard from afar. The only caveat is that Sheva puts up quite a chase indeed, making your target rarely stationary. Also, you must shoot him from medium to short range so that you may reach him in time to follow-up with a melee straight punch. If Sheva leads the enemies too far away, simply call her back by pressing Partner Action.

Toss grenades if the enemies cluster around the Guard.

Toss grenades if the enemies cluster around the Guard.

If the chainsaw man and Majini cluster up, wait for Sheva to break away and toss a grenade into the group. A grenade blast at close range stuns the chainsaw man and provides some relief from the Majini until their replacements arrive. Also, be sure to make wise use of the exploding barrels in the area. Shoot the barrels as the Guard is moving near them, but not if Sheva stands in the blast radius.

If rifle ammo runs low, pop off a few Majini heads and they might drop some supplies. Otherwise, try to ignore and dodge the Majini, since a replacement appears for every enemy killed. Focus on taking out the Guard as fast as possible, before he saws poor Sheva in half. When he finally dies, take out the remaining enemies and then search his body to find the Guard’s Key.

Unlock the gate in the garden and proceed to the exit.

Unlock the gate in the garden and proceed to the exit.

Time to Move On

To complete the demo, head up the stairs and use the Guard’s Key to unlock the metal gate. Proceed through the gate and open the treasure chest to collect a bunch of treasures. However, without a Merchant around these items are not very important. Examine the large gate at the end of the alley to complete the demo.
